Some of the wonderful women from the ITP program at NYU invited me to an afternoon of fancy cakes and indigo dying. I wanted to see the effects of indigo dye on vegetable tanned leather and the results were beautiful! Indigo has been used for thousands of years as one of the only natural blue dyes. It has been coveted by many cultures and was the original dye used for blue jeans.
In order to create the beautiful white line details, I used elastic bands wrapped around the leather before dipping it into the dye bath. With the finished leather I created a small phone case as a test piece. I am in love with this natural deep blue finish!
